The plan to route a new road through Turoe & Knocknadala
(August 31st 2003)

It is understood that the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) approach being used in connection with the planned new section of the N6 Roadway Upgrade scheduled to go through the Turoe & Knocknadala area of East Galway may be very heavily flawed in a number of ways; and, that as a consequence, this particular section of the planned new road is almost certainly in breach of the law relating to EU Directive 97/11/EC.

Under the leading headline on the front page of the August 22nd 2003 edition of the Connacht Tribune Newspaper, it is stated: "Galway County Council has confirmed the Galway to Ballinasloe and Ballinasloe to Athlone sections of the N6 upgrade will go to the Compulsory Purchase Order stage by the end of the year" - which is now a mere 4 months away.

If it were to go ahead, it is believed that much of what's left (around Turoe and Knocknadala) of the Iron Age Celtic monuments mentioned in Fr Tom O'Connor's new book titled "Turoe & Athenry: Ancient Celtic Capitals of Ireland" will be COMPLETELY destroyed.  For further information on these heritage sites, please visit: http://www.turoeandathenry.com/

Some of the difficulties connected with the faulty EIA procedure referred to above were outlined in the "Telling it like it is" publication distributed at the United Nations Earth Summit Conference 2002 in Johannesburg last year.  A link to the document in question can be found in the next section down.
